Apparently, getting The Dark Tower made is becoming an epic quest of its own.
Mike Flanagan has been working for years to bring Stephen King’s sprawling saga to the screen, and while there’s still no official green light, he has offered fans a little reassurance.
While promoting his upcoming Carrie series, Flanagan responded to a question on Bluesky with this:
“It’s the biggest thing I’ve ever worked on, but we’re making progress.”
Considering what he’s trying to adapt, that sounds about right.
The Dark Tower mixes westerns, horror, fantasy, science fiction, and enough connections to King’s other stories to make organizing the whole thing a full-time job. You don’t casually squeeze Roland Deschain’s journey into a movie and hope everybody gets the point.
Hollywood already tried that in 2017.
That went well.
Flanagan’s proposed approach is considerably more ambitious: five seasons of television, followed by two standalone movies. The first season’s scripts are already written, and King has given his approval.
Now comes the part where someone has to agree to pay for it.
Flanagan has described getting this project off the ground as one of the most complicated undertakings of his career. Prime Video has been floated as a possible home, but nothing is officially locked in. No production date. No confirmed platform. No announcement that cameras are about to roll.
So, yes, we’re still waiting.
But at least the plan recognizes how much room this story needs. Across eight novels, King built an enormous, deeply strange world. The characters need time to develop. The relationships need time to matter. And the audience needs a reason to care before everything starts getting spectacularly weird.
You can’t replace all of that with a trailer-friendly collection of gunshots and ominous dialogue.
Personally, I’d rather wait for an adaptation with an actual plan than watch another studio treat the books like a pile of recognizable names it can slap onto an action movie.
Flanagan has the scripts. He has King’s blessing. And he clearly understands the size of the job.
Now somebody needs to give the gunslinger a damn green light.
