Street Fighter took the box office crown with a $31 million domestic opening, but the weekend’s biggest surprise was a three-hour Elizabeth Holmes documentary.
Yep. Three hours of Theranos beat expectations while Ryu and Ken struggled to meet theirs.
A24’s You Can See Everything, from Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, pulled in $15 million from just 855 theaters—the biggest documentary debut since Fahrenheit 9/11. With glowing reviews and sold-out screenings, apparently there’s a serious appetite for watching a business built on bullshit unravel.
Meanwhile, Street Fighter landed below projections, adding $20.1 million overseas. A B- CinemaScore and 41% critics score suggest this probably isn’t the flawless victory Paramount wanted.
Other Mommy fell roughly 70% to $8.3 million. That D+ CinemaScore wasn’t kidding around.
And Whalefall, about a diver swallowed by a sperm whale, opened to just $8 million domestically against a $60 million budget.
Getting swallowed by a whale might be the second-scariest thing here. First place goes to whoever has to explain those numbers to the studio.
