Well, here’s a name I wasn’t expecting to see attached to The Batman: Part II.
Steven Soderbergh is stepping in to finish the final weeks of filming while Matt Reeves continues to deal with a family matter, according to Deadline.
First, hopefully everything is okay with Reeves and his family. As much as we all want this movie, some things take priority over a guy dressed like a bat.
Reeves will remain involved, working with Soderbergh remotely to complete the shoot, before returning to handle post-production. Whether Soderbergh gets a co-directing credit is still unclear.
And honestly? If someone needs to take the wheel for a few weeks, Soderbergh is a pretty damn reassuring choice.
The director has made it clear that he admires Reeves’ work on the first film and wants the new footage to fit seamlessly with what’s already been shot. Warner Bros. and DC Studios say the two will work closely with the cast and crew to preserve Reeves’ vision.
That’s the part I wanted to hear. The first Batman had such a specific mood, look, and rhythm. You can’t just drop another director into Gotham and hope nobody notices the furniture moved.
This sequel has already had a long road to the screen. Hopefully, bringing Soderbergh aboard gives Reeves the breathing room he needs and gets the production across the finish line.
Take care of your family, Matt. Gotham can wait.
