‘Backrooms’ Sets HBO Max Streaming Release Date
Well, apparently getting lost in an endless nightmare of yellow walls is good for business.
After passing Marty Supreme to become A24’s highest-grossing movie ever, Backrooms is officially heading to HBO Max on September 25th.
And if you somehow missed this whole phenomenon, Backrooms has one of the stranger roads to Hollywood success.
Director Kane Parsons took the concept from his hugely popular web series about those creepy, seemingly endless “liminal spaces” and somehow turned it into an actual A24 feature film starring Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve.
Not bad for something that basically started with the terrifying idea:
What if you accidentally fell through reality and ended up in the world’s worst office building?
Ejiofor plays a furniture-store owner undergoing some pretty serious therapy with Dr. Mary Kline, played by Reinsve. And because this is Backrooms, I’m going to assume things get considerably weirder from there.
The screenplay was written by Will Soodik, with Parsons directing the movie based on the internet phenomenon he helped turn into something much bigger.
And now it’s officially A24’s biggest movie ever.
Think about that for a second.
A creepy internet concept made by a young filmmaker, built around empty rooms, fluorescent lights and the irrational fear that something horrible might be standing around the next corner…
just became A24’s box-office champion.
Hollywood spends hundreds of millions of dollars trying to manufacture franchises.
Sometimes you just need some ugly yellow wallpaper and a hallway that never fucking ends.
