Looney Tunes Fans Show Up For “Coyote Vs. Acme”
Okay, this might be the best Hollywood comeback story of the year.
After Warner Bros. literally tried to bury Coyote vs. Acme as a tax write-off, the movie finally hit theaters this weekend—and audiences actually showed up.
Coyote vs. Acme pulled in $15.5 million during its opening weekend, good enough for second place behind Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
And considering that three years ago Warner Bros. basically said, “Nah, nobody needs to see this,” that’s pretty damn satisfying.
The movie was completed and then shelved by Warner Bros. in 2023 as part of a tax write-off strategy, which understandably pissed off filmmakers, animation fans, and pretty much anyone who thought maybe studios should actually release the movies people spent years making.
Fans refused to let it die, and eventually Ketchup Entertainment stepped in, bought the movie, and gave Wile E. Coyote his day in court.
And yes, that’s literally the plot.
After decades of ordering defective ACME products that have exploded, crushed, launched, flattened, and generally beaten the absolute shit out of him, Wile E. Coyote finally decides to sue ACME.
Honestly, it’s about time.
Will Forte plays Coyote’s attorney, while John Cena represents ACME, turning one of the oldest running jokes in animation history into a courtroom comedy.
And here’s the part Warner Bros. probably isn’t thrilled about:
The movie is apparently REALLY good.
Coyote vs. Acme debuted to a ridiculous 96% critics score and 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, breaking a Looney Tunes Rotten Tomatoes record in the process.
Think about that.
Warner Bros. had a completed Looney Tunes movie that critics and audiences love…
and they tried to throw it in the garbage for a tax deduction.
But Wile E. Coyote survived falling off cliffs, getting flattened by boulders, being blown up by dynamite and having anvils dropped on his head.
Did Warner Bros. really think a tax write-off was finally going to kill him?
