Oh good. Because apparently someone, somewhere was desperately demanding a sequel to How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.
Paramount is officially developing a follow-up to the 2003 romantic comedy, with Kate Hudson expected to return as Andie Anderson. The studio also reportedly wants Matthew McConaughey back, although the project is still in the very early stages and much of the cast hasn’t been finalized.
And my first question is:
Why?
Look, I know How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days has somehow become a beloved early-2000s romantic comedy for a lot of people.
But can we admit something?
The original movie sucked.
Yes, Hudson and McConaughey were charming. They’re both incredibly likable movie stars. But the actual story required two supposedly intelligent adults to behave like complete psychopaths for almost two hours while everyone around them somehow failed to notice.
And now, 23 years later, we’re getting another one.
Because Hollywood has apparently reached the point where absolutely nothing from our childhoods and young adulthoods is allowed to simply end.
We’ve already gotten new installments of The Devil Wears Prada, Scary Movie, Toy Story and seemingly every other recognizable title someone can find on a studio spreadsheet.
So naturally, somebody eventually reached the H’s and found How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.
There’s no story yet, which somehow makes this even funnier. Paramount doesn’t appear to have some brilliant idea that demanded these characters return.
They just know they want them back.
The original made nearly $180 million worldwide on a reported $50 million budget, which probably explains this sequel considerably better than any artistic argument ever could.
Will Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey be charming together again?
Probably.
Will people who grew up loving the original show up because of nostalgia?
Absolutely.
But did the world spend the last 23 years wondering what happened next to Andie and Benjamin?
No.
Nobody asked for this.
And somewhere in Hollywood right now, an executive is probably reading this and thinking:
“What about Failure to Launch 2?”
