Thundercats Live Action… Alive?

The ThunderCats movie is still alive.

Barely.

But alive.

Director Adam Wingard has confirmed that his long-awaited live-action adaptation of the classic 1980s animated series is not dead, despite the project spending the past five years trapped somewhere inside Hollywood’s development litter box.

Wingard, who directed Godzilla vs. Kong, first announced the movie back in 2021. Since then, other projects have repeatedly taken priority, leaving fans wondering whether we would ever actually see Lion-O raise the Sword of Omens on the big screen.

According to Wingard, the project is still “kicking around,” and a new draft of the screenplay was completed earlier this year.

That’s the good news.

The less-exciting news is that production was put on hold while Wingard focused on his latest movie, Onslaught. He admits that ThunderCats simply isn’t his number-one priority right now.

So basically:

It’s not cancelled. Nobody is currently making it. But everybody still swears it’s happening.

Ah, Hollywood.

Still, Wingard has previously talked about his genuine love for ThunderCats, and after watching him throw Godzilla and King Kong at each other like two kids smashing action figures together, I can absolutely see why someone would hand him Lion-O, Cheetara, Panthro and Mumm-Ra.

This property deserves a massive, visually insane fantasy adventure—not some cheap collection of actors wearing fuzzy cat ears.

I’m cautiously excited.

But until cameras start rolling, I’m keeping the Sword of Omens firmly inside its protective case.

ThunderCats… eventually!
