Oh, hell yes. Cole Trickle is getting back behind the wheel.
Tom Cruise is officially returning for a sequel to the 1990 NASCAR classic “Days of Thunder,” and this time he’s bringing Anne Hathaway along for the ride.
Cruise will once again play Cole Trickle, the hotshot NASCAR driver who apparently still feels the need for speed 38 years later. Hathaway joins the sequel as a team owner and engineer, which already sounds like a pretty damn interesting dynamic.
And Paramount isn’t treating this like some cheap nostalgia grab. The movie is being shot for IMAX, with a planned summer 2028 release. Considering what Cruise did with the aerial photography in Top Gun: Maverick, I can only imagine what he wants to do when you put cameras inches away from NASCARs doing 200 mph.
Jonathan Levine, who directed Warm Bodies and Long Shot, will take the wheel, while Jerry Bruckheimer returns to produce alongside Cruise and Tommy Harper.
Look, did we NEED a Days of Thunder sequel nearly four decades later?
Probably not.
But we didn’t exactly need Top Gun: Maverick either—and look how THAT turned out.
If Tom Cruise wants to strap an IMAX camera to a stock car and scare the shit out of us for two hours, I’m buying a ticket.
