WALRUS SCORE: B
Let’s file BELOW under… what the fudge did I just watch?
It starts as a JAWS tribute, swerves into horror, circles back to JAWS, then becomes something else. Then something ELSE. I’d explain, but half the fun is going in without knowing where this thing is taking you.
Is it worth watching? Hell yes. Six episodes, roughly 40 minutes each, make this an easy binge—and despite its flaws, this thing is a banger.
Just don’t expect it to make too much sense.
Josh Hartnett stars as Calvin Penney, a Newfoundlander haunted by a strange encounter in the water. Forty years later, he’s raised three kids, but whatever happened out there has never really let him go. Now, something has resurfaced. Is it coming to destroy him—or save him?
The series takes some wild swings between the fantastical and the grounded, and that’s where it starts to stumble. Is this a creepy Canadian folklore tale, or a mystery with a more explainable answer? BELOW tries to walk that tightrope, but never quite finds its footing on either side. You don’t need every question answered, but you do want the answers you get to hold together.
Still, if you can roll with the craziness, there’s plenty to enjoy. It’s strange, creepy, unpredictable, and kept me watching even when I wasn’t entirely sure what the hell was happening.
One recommendation: turn on the subtitles. Those accents were killing me.
An enjoyable monster miniseries you can knock out in one sitting—or two. Bring an open mind. Maybe leave logic on the shore.
