Zack Snyder Still Wants to Make The Dark Knight Returns—and Honestly, Let Him
Zack Snyder isn’t finished thinking about Batman.
While promoting The Last Photograph, Snyder explained that Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns remains his dream comic-book adaptation—ideally as a standalone movie outside the ongoing DC Universe.
And honestly? This makes a hell of a lot of sense.
You could practically see Miller’s fingerprints on Batman v Superman. The armored suit. The imagery. Batman looking like he could bench-press a Buick. Snyder already borrowed plenty from the book, so the interest isn’t exactly a shocking revelation.
But borrowing pieces and adapting the actual story are two different things.
The Dark Knight Returns follows an older Bruce Wayne coming out of retirement to become Batman again in a Gotham that hasn’t gotten any friendlier while he’s been away. It digs into aging, violence, politics, and what kind of person spends his nights beating criminals while dressed as a bat.
There’s considerably more going on than “Batman fights Superman.”
Snyder sees it as a companion to Watchmen, with the two adaptations serving as bookends to his exploration of superheroes. He also thinks the timing is right because audiences may be getting exhausted with comic-book movies, much as readers were ready for something different when Miller’s story arrived in 1986.
Okay. I’ll buy part of that.
But with Spider-Man: Brand New Day pulling in ridiculous money, I’m not convinced people are tired of superheroes. I think they’re tired of buying tickets to superhero movies that give them nothing to care about.
An older Batman confronting his own limitations? A complete story that doesn’t require homework, three streaming subscriptions, and a post-credits scene explaining the next six movies?
Yeah. There’s room for that.
And whatever your opinion of Snyder, the guy knows how to put a comic-book image on a screen. 300 and Watchmenweren’t exactly lacking in that department.
Of course, this is something he WANTS to make. It hasn’t been announced or greenlit. Whether DC would hand him Batman again is another conversation entirely.
But a standalone Dark Knight Returns, with a focused script and room to tell the actual story?
Give the old man his cape. Bruce Wayne, I mean. Zack can wear whatever he wants.
