Spider-Man Just Took Down Star Wars at the Domestic Box Office
Well, holy shit. That record finally fell.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has passed the $936 million domestic haul of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, becoming the highest-grossing movie ever at the U.S. and Canadian box office, not adjusted for inflation.
Apparently, the Force is strong—but Peter Parker has a pretty good grip.
Tom Holland’s latest Spidey adventure started with a ridiculous $360 million domestic opening, beating Avengers: Endgame’s opening-weekend record. But a massive debut doesn’t automatically mean you get the crown.
Just ask Endgame. That movie was a cultural event and still finished at $858 million domestically, behind The Force Awakens.
And remember what Force Awakens had going for it: a decade without a new Star Wars movie, enormous anticipation, and a holiday run that practically turned theaters into family reunions with lightsabers.
That was a hell of a mountain to climb.
But Spidey kept selling tickets. Now he’s standing at the top.
Somebody tell J. Jonah Jameson. He’s going to be fucking furious.
