Greenland wants to be many things. Part “Deep Impact” part “2021” and mostly “The Walking Dead”. Confused? So was I while watching this disaster movie mash-up.
According to Wikipedia: Greenland is a 2020 American disaster film directed by Ric Roman Waugh and written by Chris Sparling. The film stars Gerard Butler (who also co-produced), Morena Baccarin, Roger Dale Floyd, Scott Glenn, David Denman, and Hope Davis. The film follows a family who must fight for survival as a planet-destroying comet races to Earth.
So, like “Deep Impact” Gerard Butler’s character and his family are chosen by the government to hunker down in a bunker in Antartica, due to the fact that he is a structural engineer. Or, as he describes in the movie “I build building.” But to to a mix-up at the airport base, the family gets separated, and that leads into a very boring, very predictable 80% of the movie. That’s right, this is another example of having the best parts of the movie in the trailer.
This is the “Walking Dead” part of the movie. Instead of zombies, it’s just people trying to obtain Butler’s character’s wrist band, which allows him to get on the plane(s) to Greenland. But of course, the wrist band is useless without a corroborative photo I.D., so I don’t know what these homicidal maniacs are thinking. This leads to a failed trope of guilt and redemption that falls flat.
So in conclusion, “Greenland” is a jumbled mess, and steals from other movies and shows, some just as bad as this. If you are looking to watch something while you surf facebook, play a game on your phone, or even TALK on the phone, this is the movie for you. Hey, even plan a nap while watching the entire middle of this film, at least you’ll get a rest.
Or better yet, re-watch the amazing “Deep Impact” which is horribly underrated because the AWFUL movie “Armageddon” came out the same year.
